Sample Grading Rubrics
Many instructors find that using a standardized checklist (a rubric) of requirements and expectations tailored to each assignment can really speed up the grading process. It also helps us to grade with consistency and present our specifications clearly to students before paper due dates.
Whether the rubric assigns specific point values to the expected components of the assignment, uses grade letters for averaging the total score from each component, or simply provides a set of criteria upon which the papers will be evaluated, these grade sheets can be a helpful tool to us as well as a convenient guide for students, offering an overview of our grading practice.
The list below offers a sampling of rubrics (and related prompts and other assignment sheets) from various academic disciplines for grading college assignments. You may find them useful as models that you can adapt as you revise your own rubrics and course materials. More rubrics will be added as they come in. (Feel free to share yours by emailing an attachment to Jonathan Himes.)
