Writing in the Field of Business

The purpose of writing is to get the audience to do something. In other words, to influence. Writing in the Business department has one main goal and that is to be effective. However, the kinds of writings that work in the Business department regularly change, so students need to stay up-to-date with the most powerful ways to write.

Business writing must not sound boring and must be fast to read. Students should write as long as they have to, but make it as short as possible. Cut out unnecessary words and phrases that just take up space. Pay strict attention to mechanics and grammar. With poor mechanics and grammar, the writing appears less professional. Currently, MLA is the style guide of choice within the Business department.

Do not rely on Business journals for good examples of writing. Often, they are too wordy, boring, and long. They do not model quality Business writing. In the Business department, students write many different papers. Students are required to write research papers, memos, emails, various letters, and design forms.
