Writing in the Field of Health Science

Writing is just as important to the Health and Science Department as any other skill. For students to be successful in the Health department, they must be proficient in writing and critical thinking.

The Health Science department requires a number of research papers, response papers, and journal reviews. Students are expected to be able to conduct a library review of the pertinent literature related to specific topics and be able to demonstrate in writing an understanding of the implications of research findings. Deficient student writings make critical mistakes in grammar, spelling, and quality of content. Students need to pay attention to grammatical problems and allow time for editing. The quality of content relies on a number of important factors. A few suggestions include: collect research in advance, know the subject well, and spend time reviewing and revising the writing well before it is due. Health department writing also needs medical terminology and a specific vocabulary unique to the discipline.

Professional journals students may refer to for good examples of writing and research are The American College of Sports Medicine and Research Quarterly of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.
