Writing in the Field of Teacher Education

The Teacher Education Department requires a variety of writing assignments, depending upon the student's area of licensure. English and Social Studies students have more writing assignments than Science or Math students. The Teacher Education field has several common assignments, regardless of the student's area of licensure. Students must be able to read a journal article and then summarize the key information. Teacher Education students must also be familiar with outlining papers, articles and book chapters. Another form of writing often assigned are reflective papers. These papers describe evidence of an experience that demonstrates the educational practice taking place.

All forms of writing in the Teacher Education field need to model appropriate grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. Students must specifically pay attention to capitalizing proper nouns, understanding possessive and plural punctuation, and catching common spelling errors. Do not be overly wordy in writing and take time to plan ahead. A rushed paper is obvious to professors.

The Teacher Education department requires APA style when necessary. There are several journals that can assist in research and also provide good examples of writing. A few examples include "Teaching Tolerance", "Multicultural Review", and "The Education Digest." In addition, students would find it helpful to locate journals specific to their area of licensures.
